A few months ago, I wrote a blog about Scripture Writing here. Since we use this spiritual discipline at Buried Treasures Home, I saw a need to make a list of what to look for in a scripture passage so that one can get the most out of God’s word. Below is a list I compiled of items to focus on when participating in Scripture Writing. You may come up with more on your own. But for now, hopefully this is a list you can print and use as you interact with God’s Word through Scripture Writing.
Names of God – Almighty God, Heavenly Father, the Lord etc.
Action words – go, stay, wait, pray etc.
A command for His children
Characteristics about God or Jesus or the Holy Spirit
Characteristics about us in our rebellion
Characteristics about us after we are redeemed
Characteristics about God’s Word
Consequences of rebellion
Results and rewards of obedience
A promise to His children
The words IF, THEN, THEREFORE, ALWAYS, BUT
Things God will do and things we are to do
Phrases that begin with “so that” or “in order that”
Place your name where there are personal pronouns
For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Hebrews 4:12
