A Brief Look at the Holy Spirit

Do you know much about the 3rd person of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit? I hope you do. Maybe you believe you are inadaquate to talk about who He is with any amount of confidence. So if you want to find encouragement and add a little to your knowledge of who He is, then jot down these facts and then study on your own the 3rd person of the Trinity.

Today, in my Bible reading, I learned a few traits about the dear Holy Spirit in only a few verses. While I believe the Holy Spirit is in the Bible repeatedly and often, in John 14, Jesus speaks of Him clearly and gives several characteristics of His wonderful person in only a couple of verses!

You can look in your Bible at these verses:

John 14:16 we learn:

  • Jesus the Son asked God the Father to give the Spirit to the disciples.
  • The Holy Spirit is an advocate(see verse 26). This verse defines two functions of the Holy Spirit: He helps every Christian(the Helper) and He is present with every Christian.

John 14:17 we learn:

  • He is called the Spirit of truth. And unbelievers(the world) cannot know Him. Again Jesus states two functions of the Holy Spirit: He lives with every Christian and He is in every Christian.
  • The Holy Spirit and Jesus share the same nature. As a fact, all three persons of the Trinity do. But Jesus speaking of the Holy Spirit testifies about the Holy Spirit when Jesus says in the last half of verse 17, “But you know Him, for He lives with you and will be in you.”

By the power of the Holy Spirit, Jesus lives inside of every Christian. It is His Holy Spirit that gives us the capability to know Jesus and feel His presence through the Holy Spirit all through our lives.

No book could teach all there is to know about the promised Holy Spirit. But in a couple of verses, we’ve learned so much.

Today, let God’s precious Holy Spirit comfort you and look for Him at work in your life. Jesus wanted the disciples(and us) to keep His commands. The Holy Spirit – our Advocate and Helper will enable you in obedience.

We have a daily God. He is here. He is not distant and if you call on Him, you will see His power displayed in your life in deeply personal and meaningful ways.

The point? So that you will live a life that brings glory to God the Father.

“We must learn the lesson continually that effective Christian living is totally dependent upon an awareness and appreciation of the Holy Spirit’s intimate presence in our lives; we must have a willingness to be directed and controlled by Him.” Kenneth Osbeck
