Why I Love Scripture Writing

Have you ever heard of scripture writing? I had never heard of it or thought of it until maybe a decade ago. I started seeing monthly scripture writing plans on Pinterest. I was intrigued, copied one and began.

It was thrilling to me to write scripture and I will tell you why in a minute. But I want you to know that there are many choices of plans out there. But you don’t have to follow a plan or write scripture every day. If you have other practices you do for your daily quiet time, the scripture writing can give variety to that special time.

Ideas for the Occasional Scripture Writer:

  • Write all the scripture references in your devotional.
  • Write the scripture section your pastor preached from Sunday.
  • Write a book of the Bible. That will take longer. If you have a designated notebook, it will feel within your reach. Recently, I started writing the book Amos.
  • Write on a certain day of the week.
  • Write scripture on a topic you are interested and spread that out over time.
  • If it is a season of the year, go on a Bible Treasure Hunt for verses about Christmas or Thanksgiving or Easter and write those.

Why do I love Scripture Writing?

  • When I choose to write, I slow down. I have to sit down. Immediately my focus is on what I am writing.
  • I notice so much more! It is important when we interact with scripture that we notice when someone is speaking, or when a command is given, or a lament is made. Sometimes I might miss these details when reading.
  • As I write, my spirit surrenders and cooperates with the Holy Spirit.
  • My understanding increases. I see with His eyes what I write.
  • My mental and emotional health improve quickly.
  • I gain a sense of accomplishement as I write.
  • It is an eternally purposeful activity. I am not wasting time.
