What Do You Know About Snow?

Do you have snow on the ground in your neck of the woods? Job 37:6 expresses, “He says to the snow, ‘Fall on the earth.

Whether you like snow or not, God sends it. For most, it will melt soon, and you may not see it ever again, or at least not for a while.

We lived in an area of the country that receives snow almost every year. It was there that I discovered the quiet that came with fresh-fallen snow. It was a hush. I thought the lack of human activity was what brought the sound of quiet. But I did a little research and learned about the hush: “Sound waves are absorbed, which is why after a snowfall it is not your imagination about how quiet it is” (The National Snow and Ice Data Center).

When my friend Terry sent pictures of the snow around her home, she included verses about snow from God’s Word. Since so many are experiencing snow now, I thought you would appreciate a biblical perspective on snow. I never realized until writing this how many snow verses there are in the Bible.

Terry marveled, “I always think about Psalm 147:16-18 that tells how He spreads his snow like wool and who can withstand His icy blast? He waters the Earth with the snow the same way the Word does for us.” Verse 18 speaks of God’s Word melting or thawing hearts.

This thawing word may represent the gospel of Christ, and this thawing wind the Spirit of Christ (for the Spirit is compared to the wind, John 3:8); both are sent for the melting of frozen souls. Converting grace, like the thaw, softens the heart that was hard, moistens it, and melts it into tears of repentance; it warms good affections, and makes them to flow, which, before, were chilled and stopped up.

Matthew Henry Commentary

She referenced Isaiah 55:10: “As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater.” The idea is that God’s Word is life-giving. And I will add the 55:11 verse idea that it will not return void, just as the rain and snow have their intended purpose all over the earth.

When Terry quoted Isaiah 1:18, she exclaimed, “Of course Jesus washes my sin white as snow!!! It’s so white out there, Valerie, that it even looks like daylight when it’s dark. It is like daylight coming through the windows. And another thought, Valerie, as if Jesus washes and He does wash my sins white as snow, and just like that bright light because of the bright snow coming through the windows even at dark, we should be that bright light everybody sees to everyone that we meet!”

Terry is right, and I am encouraged by her zeal for the Lord and her God-glorifying thoughts. Christians can see Creator God in creation that the world refuses and finds foolish. It’s just weather to them, which is more about science than a living, resurrected Creator! Yet, He created science. Many deny the existence of God (Psalm 14:1, 53:1) and will deny Him in nature (Romans 1:20). Those who know Him see His creative work everywhere, and I, for one, rejoice.

Have you wondered why snow is white? When I went to The National Snow and Ice Data Center, I learned that sunlight reflects light from snow which makes it look white. Even the science behind the white is straight from Creator God.

Lastly, Terry shared Isaiah 1:18 -“Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall be as wool.” I understand the pervasive nature of sin. It is a stain. We can’t get it off. And here is the ultimate invitation to receive God’s loving forgiveness of sin, and for us to spend the rest of our lives in love with Him! We are made clean and white like snow. Praise the Lord.

One commentary explained the power of the love of God over the stain of sin:

“There is tremendous hope in God’s forgiveness! We really can be clean from the stain of sin. Our good works can’t clean the stain. Our best intentions or promises can’t clean the stain. Our suffering or pain can’t clean the stain. Time can’t clean the stain. Death can’t clean the stain. Only the work of Jesus can make us white as snow! We really can have a break with the past, and a new beginning in Jesus Christ. The power of sin, the shame of sin, the guilt of sin, the domination of sin, the terror of sin, and the pain of sin can all be taken away in Jesus.” ENDURING WORD

And I can’t conclude without quoting the verse in Matthew 28:3, with its awesome description of the angel outside Jesus’ tomb. It says, “His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow.”

I think there are one or two more snow verses, but I’ll let you take that treasure hunt. If you find them, put them in the comments! Did you gain anything from our biblical focus on snow? Is yours melting where you live? You can share the love of God with someone using these verses about snow, and I hope you get that opportunity today.
