Torn(Audio included)

In Matthew 27, Luke 23, and Mark 15, a profound detail is recorded that happened after Jesus breathed His last on the Cross.

With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last. The curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. Mark 15:37-38

Until the curtain was torn, only the high priest had access to God’s presence in the Holy of Holies, and that was only once a year.
What is the significance of this supernatural activity?

  • The torn curtain symbolizes a reality that access to God the Father is open to all people through a relationship with Jesus, His Son. No longer is a temple needed. No longer is a human priest needed. No one is holy but God alone.
  • The torn curtain symbolized that all who know God through Jesus, His Son, have fellowship with Him by the Holy Spirit, and pray directly to Him. Jesus is our High Priest. No mediator necessary.

14 Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. 16 Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. Hebrews 4:14-16

  • The divine tearing ushered in the new way. No more animal sacrifices. After the torn body of sinless Jesus was sacrificed for sin, the temple curtain was torn. The earthquake underscores the truth that no human was involved (Matthew 27:51).

”Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have boldness to enter the sanctuary through the blood of Jesus  —  he has inaugurated for us a new and living way through the curtain (that is, through his flesh)”-
‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭10‬:‭19‬-‭20‬ ‭CSB‬

Sin separates all people from God. But He sent His Son to die in our place. Because of His obedience, anyone can choose a loving relationship with the One True God.

Such truth demands a decision. Every person, while they have breath, must decide what to do with Jesus. He came. He made the way. Then He gave us the dignity of choice, the free will to decide. God does not want anyone to perish (2 Peter 3:9).

The Bible clearly portrays the urgency of decision:

No one knows when their earthly life will end. James 4:14 says, “Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.” On the day Jesus returns, it will be too late. Plus, you don’t know when you will die. It is an individual decision to choose or reject Jesus now.

If you hear the Spirit calling, you must obey (Hebrews 3:7-8).

No one knows when Jesus will come back. Matthew 24:4 urges, “For this reason, you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour you do not expect.”

With so much warning, why would anyone test God?

Because of the Resurrection, Jesus is alive! Those who choose so great a salvation have fellowship with Him by the Holy Spirit, continually. Because of Jesus’ torn body and the torn curtain from top to bottom, uninterrupted fellowship with the God of Heaven and Earth became possible for all who believe.
