Do you ever decide in January to choose a word for the year? I have done this only once and it was in 2020. You can read about it here: https://valerierumfelt.com/2020/01/11/a-verse-and-a-word/
I’ve decided to have a word for the year once again. I am motivated to increase my awareness of God’s work in my life and my chosen word will serve to remind me. I know God has plans for me in 2024, and I want to be ready. God loves me, and I must walk in His truth.
But I can get lulled into old thought patterns by default. Once there, I no longer believe in God’s truth. And I won’t live in the knowledge of His love because I’m in a fog, like on a familiar highway, but I can barely see the road.
When I see injustice or experience it personally, I say, “God, you are the God who sees.” It affirms a truth about Him and comforts me. As I pondered my word for the year, it was that particular idea that led me to the word SEEN or SEES.
In 2024, I want to live in God’s love for me. I desire the truth that He sees me as foundational in my heart. It will remind me that He has good plans and does everything for my good. And whatever His plans are, the concept that He sees me will free me. I will know He is with me and will go with me and equip me.
The word for me for 2024 is SEEN. To incorporate the word into my life I will do the following:
- I’ve made a list of verses with that word in them.
- I plan to choose a few to memorize.
- I will look for the word in verses all through the year.
When I think of SEEN, I think of Genesis 16:13:
Genesis 16:13 – ”So she called the name of the Lord who spoke to her, “You are a God of seeing,” for she said, “Truly here I have seen him who looks after me.”“
Genesis 16:13 ESV
Another that comes to mind is I Corinthians 2:9 which is directly related to God’s love. It says:
”None of the rulers of this age understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. However, as it is written: “What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived”— the things God has prepared for those who love him—“
1 Corinthians 2:8-9 NIV
Will you choose a word for 2024? Please share your thoughts in the comments.

Thank you for the support from the Bible and spiritual writers. A verse reminds me that “ We serve a victorious Redeemer “. He never fails.

Thank you for reading and for your encouragement.
And it seems, since writing the post, my word is useful to me.

Hi, Ms. Valerie,
The word “seen” is so CONCRETE and UNAMBIGUOUS— to me, it signals a final and total understanding of a situation.
Love your 2024 word choice.
