Torn

In Matthew 27, Luke 23, and Mark 15, a profound detail is recorded that happened after Jesus breathed His last on the Cross.

With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last. The curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. Mark 15:37-38

Why is that significant? Why does scripture record that particular detail?

Until the curtain was torn, only the high priest had access to God’s presence in the Holy of Holies, and that was only once a year.

  • The torn curtain symbolizes a reality that access to God the Father is open to all people through a relationship with Jesus His Son.

Jesus’ death and resurrection guarantee that those who know God through Jesus His Son pray directly to Him. No longer would a high priest be needed, no mediator necessary.

  • The divine tearing ushered in a new way. No more sacrifices. The torn body of sinless Jesus was the only sacrifice needed for sin. He took our place.

”Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have boldness to enter the sanctuary through the blood of Jesus  —  he has inaugurated for us a new and living way through the curtain (that is, through his flesh)”-
‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭10‬:‭19‬-‭20‬ ‭CSB‬

  • Sin no longer separates us from God. He sent His Son to die for us, and because of His obedience, we can have a loving relationship with the One True God.

14 Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. 16 Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence,so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. Hebrews 4:14-16

Such truth demands a decision. Every person while they have breath is forced to consider what to do with Jesus. He came. He made the way. Then He gave us the dignity of choice, a free will to decide. God does not want anyone to perish(2 Peter 3:9). On the day Jesus returns, it will be too late. It is an individual decision to choose or reject Jesus now.

The Bible clearly portrays the urgency of decision:

We don’t know when our earthly life will end. James 4:14 says, “Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.”

If you hear the Spirit calling you must obey. Psalm 90:12 tells us, “So teach us to number our days, that we may present a heart of wisdom.”

We don’t know when Jesus will come back. Matthew 24:4 urges,  “For this reason, you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour you do not expect.”

Because of the Resurrection, Jesus is alive! Those who choose so great a salvation have fellowship with Him continually, now. Because of the torn curtain from top to bottom, uninterrupted fellowship with the God of Heaven and Earth became possible for all who believe.
